symptoms?

I am terrified of becoming a drug addict. How do you know if you are one? I mean, besides abusing. I've been through withdrawl at least 3 times before for rx anti-anxiety and anti-depression medications. I never want to do that again. Every time since then (12 years ago) I am terrified when its apparent I have to take any rx because I never want to go through that again. Am I just over anxious?

There is so much information online. Do you have a therapist? That's a great place to start.

The problem with the "mind candy" some therapists prescribe is that it can be addictive, and it forces the brain to adapt to a new reality - one that includes the chemicals in the drug - and that in itself can cause a withdrawal/wean off situation when you are done with it. Having to be weaned off doesn't make you an addict though. If you were addicted, the drug would rule your life to the point of nothing else mattered. If that is not the case (as it is hard to tell from your description) - it sounds as though you are just a little overanxious - with reason, as I'm sure the weaning off and re-adjusting is not a pleasant experience. My thought is any therapist that says you can quit any anxiety/stress medicine cold turkey is doing you a disservice... Best of luck with things!

I don't blame you for being worried about going through withdrawal. Being a recovering addict, it's one of my biggest fears! And unless somebody has been through it themselves, they don't understand the hell that is called withdrawal. You also need to understand there is a difference between "addiction" (mis-using a drug, or taking it to get high) & "physical dependence" (when you take a drug as directed by your dr but your body will go through withdrawal if you stop taking it abruptly). If you're taking the drug as you're supposed to & you're not taking just to get a "high" or euphoric feeling then you're not an addict but your body may still go through withdrawal if you stop taking it. Your dr should wean you off the drug rather than just stop giving it to you, forcing you to go "cold turkey".
