Do hobbies help anxiety?

Since middle school all up untill the end of my 11th grade year of high school I had been in choir and (American) football. The summer befor 12th grade is when my panic attacks and everything were sending me to doctors, the ER, and just driving me crazy around the end of what is this month I was diagnoised with GAD and depression. It's only been a year and I feel dead inside but I just noticed that I didn't do football or choir senior year, don't listen to music, don't enjoy things I use to enjoy, and just do nothing in general. Could lack of hobbies and doing things make anxiety worse because if so what new hobbies should I pick up? Lately I just want to do something fun you know? Tell me about your hobbies and if they help :)

Well, they CAN help. Also, depression and anxiety can be the reason you don't do things you use to, which is kind of an inverse of not doing those things leading to the anxiety and depression...if that makes any sense. I stopped doing the things I liked for a long time, but then I started trying new hobbies and some of them have helped. It's been kind of difficult because I've been a stay-at-home dad, which leaves little time for myself, but when I CAN do things I do feel a bit better. I started hiking last year (hence the name, trailseeker), and mostly it has improved my outlook. I find it gives me something to look forward to, something to keep my mind occupied, and something I can talk to others about that gives me a bit of joy. Not just the actually hiking, but reading about it, getting the gear, planning the trips, etc. I've had a few instances where my anxiety has stopped me from going (i.e. imagining bad things happening to me on a trip or whatever), but for the most part my over-all mental well-being seems to be improved by the whole of it. I've even found YouTube videos of people on their own backpacking trips that have really taught me a lot and given me entertainment.

I now listen and enjoy listening some punk rock music, a few days before I continued with a design project I enjoy doing bofore. I hate watching tv, I like going out with close friends and I like travelling. I do more of what I like, but also learning to appreciate those moments as much as I can...not to live only in the dream world
